Avoid the “Summer Slide”: READ!

May 1, 2012 at 4:49 pm

As we count down the final days of this school year and anticpate the formless summer days, I would like to remind you of the importance of reading this summer.  Summer learning loss, especially in the areas of reading fluency and reading proficiency, is well-researched and documented.  To avoid such loss, use Royal Spring’s Suggested Summer Reading list that includes the 2013 Kentucky Bluegrass Award nominees in addition to our 2013 Battle of the Books.  Our FollettShelf also should be helpful this summer in providing access to ebooks and audiobooks.  Don’t forget that you’ll need the free Follett Digital Reader app to read the ebooks and the free Catalist Digital app for audiobooks.  Both apps are compatable with ipads and Android tablets.  Audiobooks should also work with the Catalist app on smart phones.  Please allow pop-ups within your browser for FolletShelf.  Finally, do your part to ensure that Royal Spring wins the coveted trophy from the Scott County Public Library for having the highest percentage of students complete and return a summer reading log.  Have a safe and happy summer, but avoid that “summer slide” by R E A D I N G everyday!  Use Find a Book, Kentucky and NoveList to discover new authors and series if you don’t know what to R E A D next!
